ALL OF THE LIGHTS

Working with director Hype Williams on a number of music videos, “All of the Lights” by Kanye West was the final video
I edited and animated, which resulted in a nomination for “Best Editing” at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

ROLE

Editor & Motion Graphics Artist

BRIEF

I became involved in the third iteration of the video when the shooting moved from LA to NYC.  With much of the footage scrapped, a minimal budget, and a 6-week timeline, we had to rethink and re-shoot a large portion of the story. This new content had to seamlessly integrate with the the existing, bigger budget scenes.

DESIGN

As different shots were filmed and sent over, I experimented with various treatments and motion graphics in order to
achieve cohesiveness despite the difference in cameras and shoot locations. I then worked to lock the edit with Hype.

With guidance from Hype, Kanye West, and Virgil Abloh, we established guidelines for timing, framing, and color usage. Once those guidelines were set, I designed hundreds of graphics for Kanye’s approval. Once approval was granted, I combined and animated the elements to create the graphics-heavy title sequences.

In order to comply with varying frame rate regulations, I also made different versions of the video to adapt to certain countries.

RESULTS

“All Of The Lights” premiered on February 19, 2011, and I was nominated for “Best Editing” at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
